Brain Functions: Details About Memory

Memory is one of the brain functions that most concerns young and old alike. It's also one of the most complex and studied. . Recent scientific research demonstrates that different types of content are processed by different memory systems and stored in various parts of the brain.

Types of memory

You can better understand the different types of memory by considering how long each one stores information. There are three main types: sensory, short-term and long-term memory.

To make sure each of these systems is operating at optimal levels, not only it is important to use them on a regular basis, it is critical that you exercise each one individually.

Here how it works:

Environment stimuli (visual, auditory…) are:

→ Captured and decoded by a sensory organ (eye, ear)

→ Stored in our Sensory Memory for a few milliseconds (up to 1 second)

→ If we decide to pay attention to the stimulus, the information will be transferred to our Short-term memory or our Working memory where it will remain stored for less than a minute.

→From here, it can be transferred, encoded and consolidated (through repetition techniques) in our Long-term memory for weeks, month, even years.
